Behind Blue Eyes - Anna Mocikat (Blog Tour)

"They are the perfect hybrid between human and machine. They are the next step in the evolution of mankind. And when they come after you, nothing in the world will save you… Welcome to the year 2095. Society has overcome everything that made human life miserable.

It has become a utopia — so perfect that it needs killer cyborgs to hunt down anyone who disagrees with it. Nephilim isn’t just any elite death squad member, she is the best. Genetically and cybernetically enhanced, she and others like her strike terror wherever they go. Knowing nothing besides this lifestyle, Nephilim believes that she’s part of a righteous cause. But everything changes for her after a hostile EMP attack. She suffers a severe system glitch. Disconnected from the grid, for the first time in her life, she begins doubting the system.

Shortly after the attack, she meets Jake. He is a 100% biological human, and she falls in love with him. Jake helps her discover that everything she had believed in was a lie. But there is no walking away from the system. And soon, Nephilim finds herself hunted by members of her own death squad. In an era of deception, who can she trust? And in this brave new world, is there a place for love between a human and a cyborg? Behind Blue Eyes is a fast-paced, cinematic action story in a dystopian setting. It’s a modern-day version of 1984 – on steroids."

Behind Blue Eyes by Anna Mocikat is set in the year 2095 in a dystopian future. After a devastating war the world is split into three conglomerates all trying to outdo each other.

Our protagonist is Nephilim, a human-machine hybrid tasked to protect the Olympias conglomerate. As a Guardian Angel her "sole purpose is to search and destroy anything that could threaten the conglomerate." Nephilim is content with her life, she's the best of the best and in line for a promotion that will change her life forever. Until one day an accident makes her start to remember her old life and she starts to question the very system she is designed to protect.

Nephilim is a really likeable protagonist and a great complex female character. She's witty, intelligent and one hell of a badass! As an Angel, she is not allowed to get attached to anyone or form any emotional bonds, not even to their work partners on the field. However, Nephilim is starting to feel. Her work partner has become her best friend who she doesn't want to get hurt, she's befriending the scientists from the lab and she's starting to fall for a certain human planning a revolution against her kind - although there may be more to him than meets the eye. All of which is against her programming and if she has any chance of hiding it from everyone else, she needs to try and hide it from herself.

There were so many dynamic and interesting characters throughout this book! I found Metatron - the leader of the angels - to be really intriguing. He is obsessive, especially with matters concerning Nephilim and a complete control freak. Everything has to be done exactly the way he wants and he demands complete adoration and devotion from his Archangels - the promotion that everyone wants and is reserved for Nephilim.

I really liked the concept of this book and the Orwellian 'Big Brother' state was set up fantastically! It really makes the reader reflect on how scary this possible future would be and how it is terrifying how we're not really that far off it as well!

Plus, I really enjoyed the slight reference to Greek Mythology - Olympias being like Olympus and the three conglomerates being similar to the 'Big 3' Gods - Zeus, Poseidon & Hades - who were always fighting. My random Percy Jackson & Greek Mythology trivia knowledge comes in handy every now and again!

Behind Blue Eyes is an action filled, exciting and brilliant story full of unexpected twists and fantastic humour. It was a pleasure to read and perfect for fans of The Kingdom and Crier's War!
