Book Review: Luminous by Mara Rutherford (ARC)

"Liora has spent her life in hiding, knowing discovery could mean falling prey to the king's warlock, Darius, who uses mages' magic to grow his own power. But when her worst nightmare comes to pass, Darius doesn't take her. Instead, he demands that her younger sister return to the capital with him. To make matters worse, Evran, Liora's childhood friend and the only one who knows her secret, goes missing following Darius's visit, leaving her without anyone to turn to.

To find Evran and to save her sister, Liora must embrace the power she has always feared. But the greatest danger she'll face is yet to come, for Darius has plans in motion that will cause the world to fall into chaos--and Liora and Evran may be the only ones who can stop him.

A witch who must learn to harness her power--or risk losing her loved ones forever."

I received Luminous by Mara Rutherford for free in exchange for an honest review as part of a blog tour organised by Insta Book Tours and Harper 360 YA. Thank you so much for having me on this tour!

I have been so excited to read this book! I’ve been seeing it all over bookstagram and it is absolutely gorgeous! Plus with the main character having the power of a star it reminded me of Stardust which is one of my favourite films!

In Luminous our protagonist is Liora and she has spent most of her life hidden away due to her magic. However, when her sister and best friend are taken by one of the most notorious mages running the country she has to do everything in her power to save them and learns more about her magic along the way.

This story was so enjoyable, I couldn’t put it down! The worldbuilding was incredible and I loved how each mage had original and interesting powers! As Liora doesn’t know much about the outside world it was a really nice experience as a reader to get to discover it with her for the first time. Plus I really liked how the author explored the idea that no one is ever truly good or truly evil - it’s a concept that I have been loving in media lately and it worked so well for these characters!

Liora is an amazing heroine and I loved how strong she was and loyal to her family and friends. Seeing her grow more confident with her powers and ultimately in herself was so inspiring!

Also another element that made me so so happy was the beginning of such a cute sapphic relationship plus some sweet found family moments!

Luminous is captivating, action packed and a star of a book (please forgive the pun I couldn’t help myself!) I really hope there is going to be a sequel and we get to see more of Liora! I’m definitely excited to read more from this author!
