Master of One - Jaida Jones & Danielle Bennett (ARC)

"Sinister sorcery. Gallows humor. A queer romance so glorious it could be right out of fae legend itself. Master of One is a fantasy unlike any other.

Welcome to the Queen's city: A terrible place to live. An excellent place to die.

Rags is a thief—an excellent one. He's stolen into noble's coffers, picked soldier's pockets, and even liberated a ring or two off the fingers of passersby. Until he's caught by the Queensguard and forced to find an ancient fae relic for a sadistic royal sorcerer.

But Rags could never have guessed this "relic" would actually be a fae himself—a distractingly handsome, annoyingly perfect, ancient fae prince called Shining Talon. Good thing Rags can think on his toes, because things just get stranger from there...

With the heist and intrigue of Six of Crows and the dark fairy tale feel of The Cruel Prince, this young adult fantasy debut will have readers rooting for a pair of reluctant heroes as they take on a world-ending fae prophecy, a malicious royal plot, and, most dangerously of all, their feelings for each other."

I was so excited to read Master of One, I loved the look of it as soon as I read the blurb. I had high expectations after seeing it described as Six of Crows meets The Cruel Prince and I have to say this book exceeded every expectation! It's easily become of my favourite books, I loved it from the first page and didn't want it to end!

Our main character is Rags, a sarcastic and well-known thief, and we join him as he is in prison after a failed heist. Now Rags has no choice but to work with the Lord Faolan and one of the Queen's frightful sorcerers on their mission to uncover an ancient fae relic or risk dying from the magic glass that they put in his heart. Coupled with an actual fae prince called Shining Talon that is obsessed with keeping him safe, they have to go on a journey to uncover the other masters of the relic under the watchful eye of Morien the sorcerer and plot their escape before the Queen can use them to create the ultimate weapon that will change everyone's lives and not for the better.

I loved Rags, he was charming, witty and the perfect protagonist for the story! He tries to act cocky and as though he doesn't care, but it is easy to see that he has got a big heart and truly comes to care about the others in the group. He doesn't feel like he belongs with the others because he is not from high class society or royalty but Shining Talon is still determined to protect him and remind him of how good he is. Also the emerging relationship between Rags and Shining Talon is so bloody cute and heartwarming!

I really enjoyed the character driven aspect of the story. All of the characters were really interesting with detailed backstories. Each had different strengths and weaknesses and I loved seeing how they all came together and worked really well with each other.

It's no secret that my favourite book trope is found family! I absolutely adore it when strangers become unlikely friends and eventually a dysfunctional family. It warms my heart every time and Master of One executed it perfectly for me!

Faes, magic and a gay main relationship - honestly what is not to love?! This story had every element that I absolutely adore, it's the perfect read for me and I can't wait to read even more from this series! Plus I'm just going to put it out there - this would make an excellent TV adaptation *cough* Netflix *cough*!

Master of One is a captivating, clever and amazingly adventurous story that you won't want to put down! It is a marvellous start to 2021 for books - I don't know how the publishing industry are going to top this! As you can probably tell I'm already obsessed!

Thank you so much Jaida Jones, Danielle Bennett and Harper 360 YA for this early copy and for introducing me to my new favourite series!
