May Day - Josie Jaffrey (ARC)
"If the murderer you’re tracking is a vampire, then you want a vampire detective. Just maybe not this one.
It’s not that Jack Valentine is bad at her job. The youngest member of Oxford’s Seekers has an impressive track record, but she also has an impressive grudge against the local baron, Killian Drake.
When a human turns up dead on May Morning, she’s determined to pin the murder on Drake. The problem is that none of the evidence points to him. Instead, it leads Jack into a web of conspiracy involving the most powerful people in the country, people to whom Jack has no access. But she knows someone who does.
To get to the truth, Jack will have to partner up with her worst enemy. As long as she can keep her cool, Drake will point her to the ringleaders, she’ll find the murderer and no one else will have to die.
Body bags on standby.
May Day is the first book in Josie Jaffrey’s Seekers series, an urban fantasy series set in Oxford, England."
I received a physical ARC of May Day by Josie Jeffrey for free by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much for the early copy!
I was instantly intrigued when I first saw this book, I mean how on earth am I supposed to resist vampire detectives and a bi love triangle?!
Our protagonist is Jack Valentine and we join her as her team are observing the human celebration of 'May Day' when suddenly a body falls from the tower. When it is decided that there are suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, Jack and her team have to hunt down the rogue vampire killing humans. Jack knows who she wants to pin the murders on but she may just have to work with him to catch the true killer.
I absolutely loved Jack's character, she is fun, sarcastic and a total bi badass! She is fairly new to being a vampire and I really enjoyed learning more about her past and how she came to be a vampire throughout the book. Plus it was pretty cool that she practically had a superpower because her photographic memory meant that she could recreate crime scenes perfectly.
Now to be honest, I'm not usually a fan of love triangles in books however the bi love triangle in May Day was so good! Jack has to choose between the alluring and suave Killian Drake or the super smart scientist Dr. Ross and even I don't know who I would choose in that situation!
I really enjoyed all of the characters, they were so fun and the dynamic between them reminded me of a cross between The Vampire Diaries and Brooklyn 99 which was INCREDIBLE! I feel like this book was made for me because it had so many of my favourite elements together that were done really well.
May Day was such a good story, I can't wait to read even more from this series! Vampires are back and they are better than ever!
