The Strange Book of Jacob Boyce - Tom Gillespie (Blog Tour)
"A spiraling obsession. A missing wife. A terrifying secret. Will he find her before it’s too late?
When Dr Jacob Boyce’s wife goes missing, the police put it down to a simple marital dispute. Jacob, however, fears something darker. Following her trail to Spain, he becomes convinced that Ella’s disappearance is tied to a mysterious painting whose hidden geometric and numerical riddles he’s been obsessively trying to solve for months. Obscure, hallucinogenic clues, and bizarre, larger-than-life characters, guide an increasingly unhinged Jacob through a nightmarish Spanish landscape to an art forger’s studio in Madrid, where he comes face-to-face with a centuries-old horror, and the terrifying, mind-bending, truth about his wife."

Trigger Warnings: implied suicide, gore, violence, swearing.
Our protagonist is Jacob Boyce, an Earth scientist from Glasgow who believes that the secret to being able to detect and prevent earthquakes lies in a single painting. Due to his obsession with this painting he's absent and totally work focused leading to troubles in his marriage. Fed up of being neglected, his wife leaves and Jacob is suddenly on a journey that takes him across Spain, chasing answers as to the whereabouts of not only his wife but a breakthrough in his work.
The Strange Book of Jacob Boyce reads as Gone Girl meets The Goldfinch as we follow Jacob as he tries to figure out if and how these conspiracies connect.
I loved the concept as soon as I read it. It was so interesting to delve into Jacob's psyche as he starts pushing everyone away, becoming increasingly paranoid and more terrifyingly unhinged throughout the story.
His fixation with this painting is systematically destroying every part of his personal and professional life.
Jacob enlists the help of some very eccentric characters on his travels. They were fun
and injected some good humour in the story which was great to help balance out the mystery and intrigue.
The writing is mind-bendingly brilliant with some great descriptions that really immerse the reader into the story. It also offers a deep intellectual look into art, history, science and maths and how closely they can all interconnect. I was intrigued from the first sentence and it kept me hooked until the very end.
The Strange Book of Jacob Boyce is a dark, intelligent and haunting thriller that you don't want to miss!
